Meridia Facts
Meridia facts indicate that the risk for complications
and side effects is very real. An overview of Meridia facts
is presented below:
- Meridia is the brand name of the drug sibutramine, and
is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. The drug works on
two brain chemicals that control appetite and make patients
feel full. It is recommended for persons who are obese (more
than thirty pounds over their “healthy” weight).
- Abbott Laboratories’ clinical studies reports state:
“The long term effect of Meridia on the morbidity
and mortality associated with obesity have not been established.”
On average, users of Meridia lose five to ten percent of
their body weight in tests.
- Meridia was approved by the FDA in 1997, despite concerns
voiced by the review committee regarding the drug’s
effect on the cardiovascular system and Meridia’s
limited effectiveness. Meridia went on the market in 1998.
- From 1998 to September of 2001, 29 deaths and 397 serious
side effects were reported by takers of Meridia. Because
all such reporting is voluntary, the actual numbers of incidents
and deaths is assumed to be as much as ten times higher.
- More than 9 million persons have received prescriptions
for Meridia worldwide. To date, Italy has suspended the
use of the drug, while many other European countries, including
France and Great Britain are formally investigating hundreds
of reports of side effects.
